The ruling BJP & United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA)’s pro-talks faction signed a tripartite Memorandum of Settlement on December 29.
Deal was signed by ULFA pro-talks faction chairperson Arabinda Rajkhowa in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CM Hemanta Biswa Sarma.
As per the accord, a major development package will be given to Assam. The government has promised to implement the accord fully.
Pro-talks faction of ULFA as per accord has agreed to relinquish violence & disband the body. The faction will now engage in democratic processes.
Assam endured significant violence, claiming 10,000 lives since 1979 because of ULFA, the region's oldest insurgent group.
20 youngsters had started ULFA in 1979, demanding a 'sovereign Assam'. It was declared a banned outfit by the central government in 1990.
While accord aims to bring an end to decades-old insurgency, the hardline faction of ULFA, led by Paresh Baruah, is still not part of the agreement.
