Gaganyaan’s first phase, slated for Oct. 21, is called Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1, or TV-D1. It is one of two such test launches by ISRO.
The first test flight will be done using a single-stage liquid rocket, which has been developed for the ‘abort mission.’
The flight will be a mock test for emergency situations, which will be simulated on the ascent trajectory on the ‘short duration mission.’
The crew escape system with crew module will separate at an altitude of 17 kms. The module will then deploy its parachutes aiming for a safe landing.
The crew module is then expected to start its descent towards Earth for a safe touchdown, which is expected around 10 kms off Sriharikota’s coast.
