India’s camaraderie with the Palestinians was at its peak between 1975 and 1984, when Indira Gandhi held the Prime Minister’s office.
India recognised Yasser Arafat led-Palestine Liberation Organization in early 1975. It was also given an independent office in New Delhi.
PLO’s Delhi office was declared an embassy during Gandhi’s second term. It came with all diplomatic perks and support for the Palestinian cause.
With strengthened bilateral ties, Arafat often visited New Delhi. Then-Indian PM Indira Gandhi also visited Arafat’s office in Tunisia.
PLO’s Arafat attended Indira Gandhi’s funeral in New Delhi. Media reports say he was sobbing in public.
