What changes for live-in relationships under Uttarakhand UCC

Mandatory registration

The Uniform Civil Code makes it compulsory for live-in couples to register themselves with district officials.

Strict Punishment

The code prescribes a maximum jail term of 6 months or a fine of up to ₹25,000, or both for unregistered couples.

Short deadline

Couples who delay registration by even a month could face a jail term of up to 3 months, a fine of ₹10,000, or both.

Age limit

Minors will not be allowed live-in relationships and parental consent would be required for those below 21 years of age.

Conditions apply

Live-in relationship will not be registered if one partner is married or in another relationship.

LGBTQIA+ left out

No provision for same-sex couples, relationship will not be registered in cases "against public policy and morality."

Not just within state...

The mandatory registration also extends to residents of Uttarakhand who may be in a live-in relationship outside the State.

Termination process

For legal termination of the registered relationship, a written statement in a "prescribed format" is required.

Inheritance rights

Children born out of live-in relationships will be considered legitimate, and legal heirs to their parents' property.
