Born in 1976 in Ranchi, Kalpana hails from Odisha's Mayurbhanj. She married Hemant Soren in 2006 and the couple has two children - Nikhil and Ansh.
Her father is a businessman and mother a homemaker. Kalpana holds engineering as well as MBA degrees.
Following in her father's footsteps, Kalpana is an entrepreneur. She does organic farming and owns commercial buildings.
Kalpana is involved women and child welfare programmes. She reportedly runs a school.
Kalpana was part of the ruling coalition meeting in Ranchi on Jan 30 ahead of Hemant Soren's questioning by ED.
If Hemant Soren is arrested in the land scam, speculation is that Kalpana will take over as the Jharkhand Chief Minister.
Kalpana Soren is not an MLA. If sworn in as the Chief Minister, she will have to win a by-election within 6 months.
