After the arrest of former CM Hemant Soren, JMM leaders showed support for Champai Soren to lead the government.
Champai Soren actively participated in Jharkhand statehood movement in the 1990s. From then on, he is hailed as the 'Jharkhand Tiger'.
He was elected as an independent MLA through a by-election from the Saraikela seat in 1991. He has won several polls from the seat.
Champai is a loyalist of JMM chief Shibu Soren. Before taking oath as CM, he sought blessings of the former union minister whom he calls his 'idol'.
Champai Soren served as a cabinet minister in the BJP government headed by Arjun Munda between September 2010 to January 2013.
Champai Soren became the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Minister Transport when Hemant Soren formed government in Jharkhand in 2019.
Before entering politics, Champai Soren used to work as a farmer with his father Simal Soren.
The new CM of Jharkhand received education up to the 10th grade from a government school. He has 4 sons and 3 daughters.
