Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival that involves the worship of the Sun God, considered the source of life on Earth. Devotees express gratitude.
Known as 'Nahay Khaye' it marks the beginning of the four-day festival and fasting. It is on Nov 17 this year which includes bathing and eating.
The 2nd day is known as Kharna is on Nov 18. Devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it only in the evening with kheer and roti.
The 3rd day, Nov 19 has a great significance as fasting devotees gather near water bodies before sunset and offer prayers and sing folk songs.
Nov 20 is the last day of this holy festival. Devotees offer 'arghya' to the rising sun and show gratitude towards life and nature.
The rigorous rituals of Chhath are believed to purify the body and spirit, symbolising a renewal of life and energy.
