NASA astronomers have found the oldest black hole yet. The cosmic giant has been named UHZ1 by the scientific community.
Experts estimate that the black hole is about 13.2 billion years old. This would mean it formed 470 million years after the Big Bang.
The black hole’s size is nowhere near the minuscule ratio of the black holes in our Milky Way galaxy - an estimated 0.1%, scientists said.
The newly discovered black hole is believed to weigh anywhere from 10% to 100% the mass of all the stars in its galaxy.
NASA believes the UHZ1 is an ‘outsize black hole,’ which usually weighs as much as the stars in its galaxy.
‘The black hole is at an early stage of growth,’ NASA said. Experts hope to understand the formation of the first supermassive black holes.
