Emergency services were activated at the Sydney airport in Australia after an incoming plane issued a mid-air mayday alert, which means that it faced "grave and imminent danger".

The Qantas airlines flight, arriving from New Zealand's Auckland, had experienced engine problems, according to Australian media reports. The Boeing 737-800 plane landed safely at the Sydney airport on 18 January 2023.

Ambulances were on standby at the airport after the flight issued a mayday call while flying over the Tasman Sea.
