Startling visuals emerged from Australia as police investigated the death of a man apparently wearing a bomb vest in a car.

The vest detonated when the car hit a bump on a Melbourne street, as per reports. CCTV visuals showed fire rising out of the windows as the bomb exploded.

Australia's Seven News reported that the 43-year-old man was a former soldier and had visited the house of his ex-partner before the incident on January 22.

Police said they had found explosive items inside the car and the Bomb Response Unit had to spend a considerable amount of time to declare the spot safe, as per reports.

A witness recounted hearing a loud sound and seeing the car hit a street sign. "I just heard a big, loud bang about 11 a.m. and looked out the window of my house and saw a car had gone through the roundabout and hadn't braked or anything like that and crashed into a sign. They had the street blocked off and police pretty much patrolling and 15 police cars all around the place," said Ben Augel.
