Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wished the Sikh community on the occasion of Bandi Chhor Divas. Trudeau called it an occasion to recognise the important contributions the Sikh community has made in building a stronger Canada.

Bandi Chhor Divas is celebrated on Diwali to commemorate the release of the sixth Sikh guru Hargobind. He was imprisoned in 1619 at Gwalior Fort by Mughal emperor Jahangir. Hargobind refused to be released without the freedom of 52 princes imprisoned alongside him. The Sikh guru had finally prevailed.

Trudeau said that the festival is an occasion to "reflect on the importance of standing in solidarity with those around us facing injustice and serving those in need".

The north American country has a large Sikh-Canadian population.
