As a part of a preliminary decision, the United Nations’ top court has decided stopped short of ordering a cease-fire in Gaza.

But the court said that Israel must take steps to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza. The 17-judge bench has not ruled on the merits of the genocide allegations, which may take years to decide.

South Africa, which brought the case, had asked for the court to order Israel to halt its operation.
