The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran deals a severe blow to ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
For months, the US, Qatar and Egypt have been engaged in tense discussions with Israel and Hamas to stop fighting in the Palestinian territory, and release Israeli and foreign hostages still held by Hamas. Haniyeh was Hamas' man at the table for these negotiations.
Diplomats viewed Haniyeh as a relatively pragmatic, moderate leader who was well regarded by warring factions of the Palestinian resistance. He was among the few Palestinian leaders willing to consider reconciliation and peace with Israel.
Conflict resolution experts argue that Haniyeh's assassination kills peace talks and strengthens hardliners in the Hamas, like the group's military chief Yahya Sinwar.
