China's efforts to achieve maritime military parity with the United States have suffered a setback following the sinking of its newest state-of-the-art nuclear submarine at the Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan around May or June 2023. Satellite imagery has revealed the incident despite China's attempts to conceal it, and a US defense official noted that the Zhou-class vessel was believed to have been docked next to a pier when it sank.
