A rubber dinghy full of migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea and only some lived to tell the tale. At least 60 migrants on the small raft died in the incident, according to the 25 survivors who have now been rescued.
Those who were rescued said women and at least one child were among those who died. The engine of the small boat broke down three days after the group departed from the Libyan coast.
Humanitarian group SOS Méditerranée vessel Ocean Viking carried out the rescue mission in the Mediterranean and said those found were “in very weak health condition,” as per BBC.
The Italian coast guard also helped with the mission. Two survivors who were found in critical condition were swiftly flown to Sicily on a helicopter.
Over 3,100 deaths and disappearances were reported in the Mediterranean Sea in 2023. The International Organisation for Migration said it was the highest death toll from the waterbody since 2017.
