New York's Rockville Centre diocese will pay more than 323 million dollars to about 530 survivors who alleged they were sexually abused by priests when they were children.
The Roman Catholic diocese announced the new bankruptcy settlement, after a previous settlement offer of 200 million dollars was rejected by the survivors.
Rockville Centre will contribute nearly 235 million dollars to the settlement fund, with four insurers covering the rest. The diocese filed for bankruptcy in October 2020, citing the cost of lawsuits filed by childhood victims of clergy sexual abuse.
More than two dozen churches have filed for bankruptcy in recent years over similar lawsuits, showing the extant of sexual abuse faced by children at the hands of priests.
