A deadly fire ripped through a hostel in New Zealand's capital during the intervening night of May 15 and 16, 2023.
At least 6 people died, even as Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said that the death toll may rise further. More than 10 persons remained missing.
Around 50 people escaped the fire.
The incident occurred at Loafers Lodge hostel in Wellington.
Fire services chief Nick Pyatt called it the "worst nightmare", and said that "it does not get worse than this".
