New Zealand is undertaking major electoral reform by moving towards granting people below 18 years of age the right to vote, as well as contest local elections.
A bill to grant electoral rights to 16- and 17-year-olds has passed its first reading in Parliament, as per a Guardian report. While leftwing legislators supported the move, their rightwing counterparts opposed it.
This comes 9 months after the country's Supreme Court said that the existing age of 18 was inconsistent with human rights law.
