At least 100 people have died in Mexico in the last two weeks from heat-related causes, with temperatures rising close to 50 degrees Celsius in certain regions, according to the country's health ministry.
Heat waves have strained the electrical grid with unprecedented demand, forcing authorities to suspend schools and colleges in certain parts.
Almost all of the deaths were caused by heat stroke, with only a few due to dehydration. During the same period last year, there was only a single heat-related fatality.
Approximately 64% of the deaths occurred in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, which borders Texas. The rest were in neighbouring states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
