Bandits armed with rocket-propelled grenades attacked a police convoy in Pakistan’s Punjab, killing at least 12 officers and wounding seven others.
The convoy was ambushed while on a patrol in a deserted area in Rahim Yar Khan district’s Kacha which is known for bandit hideouts along the Indus River, where hundreds of heavily armed robbers evade police.
Police said one of their vehicles broke down while passing through accumulated rainwater along farm fields when dozens of bandits launched the attack, which is one of the deadliest of its kind in recent years.
Pakistan has been lashed by monsoon rains since July.
