US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at the Taiwanese Parliament Wednesday, said that the US had made a promise 43 years ago to always stand with Taiwan.
“Taiwan is a flourishing democracy. It has proven to the world that hope, courage and determination can build a peaceful and prosperous future despite the challenges it faces. Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that’s the message we bring in today,” she said.
She was speaking at an event along with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.
After weeks of uncertainty, Pelosi flew into Taiwan on an Air Force passenger jet Tuesday, becoming the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island.
China announced military manoeuvres in retaliation, to which Taiwan’s military responded that it has a full grasp of air and naval activities near the country and has the ability to defend national security.
