Queen Elizabeth II: Britain's longest-reigning monarch passes away at age of 96

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, passed away on 8 September 2022. She was aged 96, and had been monarch for 70 years.

The Queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after battling age-related health issues. She will be succeeded by her eldest son Charles.

King Charles and the Queen Consort Camilla will remain at Balmoral on 8 September and will return to London on 9 September, as per a statement by Buckingham Palace.

Queen Elizabeth's close family members had earlier travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
