High waters flooded neighborhoods around Houston following heavy rains that have already resulted in crews rescuing more than 400 people from homes, rooftops and roads engulfed in murky water.

Others prepared to evacuate their property.

A flood watch remained in effect through Sunday afternoon as forecasters predicted additional rain.

For weeks, drenching rains in Texas and parts of Louisiana have filled reservoirs and saturated the ground.

Torrential rain inundated southeastern Texas on May 3, forcing schools to cancel classes and closing numerous highways around Houston.

More than 9 inches of rain fell during the past 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a flood warning until Tuesday for the region.
