In a fresh flashpoint between USA and Russia amid tension over Ukraine, an American athlete was reportedly detained in Russia. The sportsperson has been identified as basketball player Brittney Griner.
She was reportedly held in February at the Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow on the charges of carrying illegal drugs. Russian customs officials reportedly said that vape cartridges containing hashish oil were seized from Griner's luggage.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist is now reportedly part of a probe into large-scale transportation of drugs, which can lead to 10 years of imprisonment in Russia.
Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury. Many US women basketball players reportedly visit Russia to play during off-season in America. Reports suggested that salaries are more lucrative in the Russian basketball circuit.
