The man accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie on a stage in western New York is a 24-year-old man from Fairview, New Jersey.
In a news release, police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Hadi Matar.
Police said Rushdie was about to speak at a literary festival hosted by the Chautauqua Institution when Matar allegedly rushed on stage and stabbed him at least once in the neck and the stomach.

Police have not determined a motive for Matar’s attack on Rushdie, though FBI has joined the investigation.
The exact charges against Matar, who had bought a ticket to Friday’s talk, would also depend on Rushdie’s condition following the stabbing.
