Thousands pay tribute to ex-pope Benedict at lying-in-state

Thousands of people paid their respects on Monday to former pope Benedict XVI  at the start of three days of lying-in-state at Vatican city's St Peter's Basilica before his funeral.

95-year-old Benedict died on December 31 in the Vatican monastery where he had lived since his retirement in 2013

Twelve hours of viewing are scheduled for January 3rd and 4th before the funeral on January 5, which will be led by Pope Francis, at St. Peter's Square.
