A teacher in United Kingdom's East Sussex is facing backlash for terming a Class 8 student 'despicable' after she questioned a classmate who said she identifies as a cat.

The incident came to light after a video of the interaction went viral on social media.

According to reports by UK media, the student said that there are only two genders and questioned how her classmate could identify as a cat.

The teacher then reportedly said that she was questioning someone's identity and that's despicable. The teacher also said that the student needs a proper conversation on diversity and inclusion. The student reportedly replied saying it was just her opinion and that if she expected to respect others' thoughts, hers need to be respected as well.

While the teacher goes on to explain the difference between biological sex and gender identification, she also reportedly called the student 'homophobic' and suggested that she needs to go to an asylum.
