In the port city of Mariupol, where Ukrainians are trying to fend off a Russian advance, an ambulance raced into a city hospital on Sunday, carrying a 6-year-old girl injured by Russian shelling.

Medics worked tirelessly to try and save the child, but tragically she succumbed to her injuries.

The emotions of the child's death were clearly felt by the staff, one medical worker was in tears and another expressed an expletive-ridden rant towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Show this to Putin," he said angrily. "The eyes of this child, and crying doctors."

As the medics worked on the child, her father was raced through to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in the same hospital, injured alongside his daughter.

Her mother sat alone in the corridor, sorting the belongings that had been thrown together as they left for the hospital.

In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called "aggressive statements" by leading NATO powers.

Amid the mounting tensions, Ukraine announced that a delegation would meet with Russian officials for talks. But the Kremlin's ultimate aims in Ukraine — and what steps might be enough to satisfy Moscow — remained unclear.
