United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on July 6 condemned Israel for its military operation at the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. This was Israel's largest military operation in around 2 decades.
Guterres said that the operation had left over a hundred civilians injured, forced thousands to flee damaged schools and hospitals and disrupted water and electricity networks. He also slammed Israel for blocking injured people from receiving medical care and obstructing humanitarian workers.
The UN chief added that there has been excessive force used by Israel, and called on the country to exercise restraint and use only proportional force.
Israel had claimed that its operation was targeted against militants hiding in the refugee camp. The two-day mission led to the deaths of at least 12 Palestinians. One Israeli soldier also died.
