USA: deadly fungal infection cases rising; up 4,300% in 6 yrs

A fungus which is hard to kill and has a high mortality rate among humans is spreading across the United States of America, as per a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Candida auris, which was discovered in Japan in 2009, infected more than 2,300 people in USA in 2022, as compared to 53 in 2016.

The fungus has a mortality rate of 60% and poses a high risk to older people or those with compromised immune systems, as per USA's Centers for Disease Control.

Candida auris is hard to destroy, with at least 7 infections being resistant to available antifungals in 2021, up from 4 in the years before 2020, as per CDC.
