Xiaomi became the number one smartphone brand in the world in terms of sales for the first time ever in June 2021, according to Counterpoint Research.

Xiaomi’s sales grew 26% compared to May, and it captured 17.1% of the global smartphone market. Samsung followed in 2nd place with 15.7% market share, and Apple at 3rd with 14.3%.

Counterpoint noted that Xiaomi seems to have filled the gap left by Huawei in markets like Africa, China, and Europe, as Huawei was hit by US trade sanctions and left unable to manufacture Android smartphones with Google services.

Samsung’s production, meanwhile, has been hit by a new wave of Covid-19 cases in Vietnam, where it has its manufacturing factory.
