After 'no data', another shocker from govt on migrants

Sep 16, 2020 07:09 IST

A day after saying that it had no data on migrant deaths during the nationwide lockdown, the central govt delivered another shocker on the issue in Parliament on Tuesday. The govt told Parliament that the mass movement of migrants was because of "fake news". The Home Ministry was responding to a written question by Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy on steps taken to protect migrant labourers before the lockdown was announced on March 25. The MP also sought to know the reasons why thousands of labourers ended up walking home and the number of migrants labourers who died on their journey home. According to Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, the migration was triggered by panic created by fake news regarding the duration of lockdown. He added that people, especially migrant labourers, were worried about adequate supply of basic necessities like food, drinking water, health services and shelter.
