Air pollution has been linked to irreversible loss of eyesight in a long-term study published Tuesday.

Researchers have found a link between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and air pollution. AMD is the leading cause of blindness among people above 50 in wealthy nations.

Publishing their analysis in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers assessed data from over 115,000 participants who reported no eye problems at the start of the study period in 2006.

Previous studies have also found air pollution to be the cause of a host of other health risks including heart and lung disease.
