If the last couple of years have taught us anything, it’s that you should always be prepared for everything! Even if you don’t live in a danger-prone area, the climate crisis has made natural disasters all the more unpredictable.

No matter where you live, a ‘go bag’ which is essentially an emergency survival kit, can come in handy. So, whether it’s a quick evacuation or a lockdown, here are some essential items that should be in your ‘go bag’.

First of all, you need a sturdy bag pack where you can store everything and it should be easy to carry.

Once you have a bag, start off with survival gear. You can add a Swiss knife or multitool, first aid kit, a flashlight with extra batteries, phone charger or power bank, a whistle and lighter or waterproof matches.

Next is protective gear. You need N95 masks, a raincoat or poncho, gloves, a hand sanitiser, a light jacket, a change of clothes and maybe a small tent.

Also add in a bag of toiletries with some soap, sanitary wipes, toothpaste and toothbrush. Don’t forget sanitary pads or tampons, depending on your needs.

Keeping important documents together is essential. Store a copy of medical prescriptions, passports or ID, a printed list of emergency contacts as well as some cash in a waterproof bag.

Lastly, you need to stock some food and water. You should ideally carry dry, camping style eatables like snack bars, biscuits, nuts and anything with a longer shelf life. Make sure to refresh the perishables in your go bag every few months so that the food doesn’t expire.

Beyond this, you can get as creative as you want based on your personal emergency needs.

Looking at the world around us, readying a basic ‘go bag’ is not being an alarmist but rather just prepared for the surprises of life on planet Earth.
