Onion prices crash: Maharashtra govt to give compensation of ₹300/quintal to onion farmers

Onion prices have crashed from ₹ 800 per quintal to ₹ 450 per quintal, severely affecting onion farmers. Amid this crash in onion prices, the Maharashtra government has announced a compensation of ₹ 300 per quintal for onion farmers, providing much-needed relief to onion farmers in the state. Maharashtra accounts for the highest onion production in the country.

In a statement issued in the state legislative assembly, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde said, “The khariff onion crop prices have seen sharp decline due to surplus production. The onion cultivation has been higher in other parts of country as a result the demand for onions from Maharashtra has dropped. This has resulted in price fall.”

The price of onions fell to ₹ 2 per kilogram versus ₹ 4 per kg last week.
