Telecom giant Bharti Airtel has announced a significant breakthrough in its fight against spam communications, revealing that its AI-powered spam detection system flagged an astounding 8 billion spam calls and 0.8 billion spam SMSes in just two and a half months. The advanced AI solution, which utilizes sophisticated algorithms, identified approximately 10 lakh spammers daily, demonstrating its effectiveness in curbing unsolicited communications.
The system successfully alerted 252 million unique users about these spam messages, resulting in a notable 12 percent drop in the number of customers answering such calls. Airtel proudly proclaimed itself as India’s first telecom network to combat spam using artificial intelligence, marking a major step forward in enhancing user experience.
Geographical Spam Hotspots
Delhi, unfortunately, topped the list of both originating and receiving the highest number of spam calls. Other regions such as Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh also saw substantial volumes of spam calls. Mumbai and Karnataka followed Delhi in originating calls, while Gujarat led in originating spam SMS, with Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh close behind. The targeted recipients of these SMS scams were primarily from Mumbai, Chennai, and Gujarat.
Spam Call Demographics
An analysis of spam call activity revealed that 76 percent of all spam calls were directed at male customers. People aged 36-60 were the most frequent targets, comprising nearly 50 percent of the calls, while those aged 26-35 accounted for 26 percent. Interestingly, senior citizens were less frequently targeted, making up only 8 percent of the spam calls.
The peak time for spam calls was between noon and 3 p.m., with the activity starting at 9 a.m. and escalating throughout the day. The frequency of these calls dropped by approximately 40 percent on Sundays. Additionally, smartphones priced between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 received around 22 percent of all spam calls.

Airtel’s AI system employs various technical measures to detect and block spam calls in real-time, boasting impressive accuracy. Regulatory Support for Legitimate Calls
To help distinguish legitimate communications from spam, the government has allocated a specialized number prefix—160—for service and transactional calls from banks and financial institutions. Customers who have not activated the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) service will continue to receive promotional calls from numbers prefixed with 140.
