If you love munching on chocolate, you’re going to love this new scientific finding!

While eating sugary chocolates daily sounds like a recipe for weight gain, a study on menopausal women claims that eating a concentrated amount of chocolate during a small window during the day may help the body burn fat and decrease blood sugar levels.

Published in The FASEB Journal, researchers from the University of Murcia in Spain investigated the effects of eating milk chocolate at different times of the day. In a randomized, controlled, cross-over trial of 19 postmenopausal women, it was discovered that a 100 gm intake of chocolate containing 18.1 gm of cocoa content, in the morning or night-time did not lead to weight gain.

In fact, the team noted that a high intake of chocolate during morning hours may burn fat and reduce blood glucose levels. According to the authors of the study, chocolate reduced ad libitum energy intake, which was consistent with the observed reduction in hunger, appetite and the desire for sweet treats as shown in previous studies.

Before you go overboard on the chocolate express, you must remember that this study was conducted on a very small cohort of women and the findings may not apply to everyone. It is also important to note that milk chocolate is often high in sugar, fats and overall calories. Be mindful of your intake at night as the caffeine in chocolate may even hamper your sleep.
