More than 50 per cent users of medicinal marijuana for pain relief also experience clusters of multiple withdrawal symptoms when they're between uses, finds a new study.

10 per cent of the patients taking part in the study experienced worsening changes to their sleep, mood, mental state, energy, and appetite over the two years of cannabis use.

Published in the journal Addiction, the researchers say that while some people experience significant benefits from medical cannabis, their findings 'suggest a real need to increase awareness about the signs of withdrawal symptoms to decrease the potential downsides of cannabis use.'
