The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Mandi Kangana Ranaut repeated her earlier claim that India had become independent in 2014. She further expressed her desire for India to become a 'Hindu Rashtra.'

Kangana said, "The country, in the truest sense, attained freedom in 2014. It not only marked freedom for thinking but also for Sanatan. It gave us the freedom to practice and flaunt our own religion without fear and advance the vision of making India a Hindu Rashtra."

Reacting to her remarks, Congress candidate from Mandi Vikramaditya Singh on May 14 said, " It is very unfortunate that she is disrespecting the freedom fighters who gave their lives for Independence."

Vikramaditya Singh, who is  up against Kangana, said that the whole nation knows the reality when we achieved independence.

Himachal Pradesh's Mandi seat will go to polls on June 1 in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections.
