Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections on May 14 from Varanasi. Voting in Varanasi will take place on June 1 in the seventh phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
Four proposers were there with Prime Minister Modi when he filed the nomination papers. The proposers were from diverse backgrounds.
PM Modi's proposers were Pandit Ganeshwar Shastri, Baijnath Patel, Lalchand Kushwaha, and Sanjay Sonkar.
Pandit Ganeshwar Shastri is a member of the Brahmin community. He was the one behind determining the auspicious time for the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Baijnath Patel is an RSS volunteer from the OBC community. Lalchand Kushwaha is also from the OBC community. Whereas, Sanjay Sonkar belongs to the Dalit community.
A person who is contesting the polls needs to have a proposer, According to the Election Commission guidelines, a proposer must be a registered elector of the Assembly or parliamentary constituency for which the person is endorsing a candidate's nomination.
According to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, a candidate of a recognised state or national party needs one proposer, while an Independent or the candidate of an unrecognised party needs 10.
