Following a massive controversy in which even Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi clarified on the latter's remarks.

Days earlier, CM Channi had said that 'bhaiyyas' from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi cannot be allowed to come and rule Punjab. He was accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is leading Congress' campaign in UP, when he made the comments.

Reacting to the statement, Prime Minister Modi had accused Congress of trying to make people of different regions fight to gain electoral advantage. He also said that important Sikh religious figures like Guru Gobind Singh and Sant Ravidas were born in Patna, and Varanasi respectively.

Channi and Priyanka claimed that the comment was twisted out of context by opponents. The CM said that he was referring to individuals like Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, and not migrant workers.
