Days before Punjab elections, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi stoked a controversy by his comments on "UP ke bhaiya". To make the matter worse for the party, the CM made the comments with Priyanka Gandhi by his side. Priyanka is leading the Congress campaign in UP.
Addressing an election rally, Channi urged Punjabis to not let "UP, Bihar ke bhaiya enter Punjab". His jibe was aimed at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Priyanka Gandhi, who Channi called "Punjab ki bahu", was seen clapping at Channi's comment.
The Opposition was quick to seize on the comment and attacked Congress party and Priyanka Gandhi for what they said was an insulting comment about the people of UP and Bihar.
Reacting to the CM's remark, Kejriwal called it "shameful".
AAP's Chief Minister candidate Bhagwant Mann pointed out that "Priyanka Gandhi is from UP, so she too is a bhaiya".
BJP's Tejasvi Surya also attacked Priyanka Gandhi pointing out that "in UP she calls herself UP ki beti, but in Punjab claps at insult to UP people".
