Despite holding the maximum number of 209 rallies and roadshows during the electioneering since mid-January to enhance her party's poll prospects, the grand old party yet again failed to make a mark in the most important election before Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks a revote in 2024.

The Congress has lost Punjab too, and the spotlight now has shifted to leadership and the team which was operating behind the scenes, whether for Priyanka or her brother Rahul Gandhi.

In Punjab, the operation done by Rahul and Priyanka did not deliver the desired results and the last minute gamble played by the party in making Charanjit Singh Channi, a Scheduled Caste Chief Minister did not pay well.

In UP, the Congress leaders had clearly hinted that the polarised electoral ambience between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party has squeezed them out of the race but were confident of emerging as a factor after the results.

But, the Saffron landslide, seemed to have buried Congress further in the UP political graveyard where Priyanka’s party had Mayawati-led BSP for company.

When Priyanka formally joined politics and started focusing on Uttar Pradesh, Congress had 2 MPs and 2 MLAs from their family bastions of Amethi and Rae Bareli. Just over 3 years later, that number has reduced to just her mother Sonia Gandhi being the lone Congress MP, as the party drew a total blank from the 10 assembly constituencies in the erstwhile bastion.
