A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi linked Samajwadi Party election symbol "cycle" to terrorists, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has hit back saying insult to cycle is insult to the nation.

Addressing an election rally in UP's Hardoi on Sunday, the PM attacked the SP symbol in the context of recent convictions in 2008 Ahmedabad blasts. Taking a swipe at the SP, PM Modi asked why did the terrorists choose cycle, which is the symbol of SP, to plant bombs.

He also accused the Samajwadi Party of withdrawing cases against those accused in blasts in Varanasi, Ayodhya and Lucknow in 2006 and 2007.

Hitting at the PM's comments on cycle, Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: "The cycle connects the farmers to their fields, laying the foundation of prosperity. The cycle takes our daughters to school, rising above social restrictions, it races ahead, untouched by inflation; the cycle is the common man's ride, the pride of rural India; an insult to the cycle is an insult to the entire nation". He posted the tweet along with the image of a schoolboy riding on a cycle, smiling and playing with a toy plane.

UP has voted in three phases till now and has four more phases to go.
