A complaint was filed at Mumbai's Ghatkopar police station against actor Ranbir Kapoor and his family for allegedly offending religious sentiments in a Christmas celebration video.
The complainant argued that the video depicts the actor pouring alcohol on a cake and lighting it on fire while saying ‘Jai Mata Di.’
He claims this is disrespectful as, in Hinduism, the fire god is invoked before invoking other deities, but Ranbir Kapoor and his family members deliberately used intoxicants while celebrating the festival of another religion and chanted Jai Mata Di.
He alleged that the act of setting the cake on fire followed by the ‘Jai Mata Di’ chant hurt his religious sentiments.
No First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in the case yet.
In a video that was widely shared on social media, a man was seen pouring liquor over a cake as Ranbir, sitting beside Alia Bhatt, lights it and says ‘Jai Mata Di’. The video was reportedly from the Kapoor's family Christmas lunch.
‘Ranbir Kapoor brings everyone to laughter with his ‘Jai Mata Di’ cheer while lighting up the cake during the Kapoor family's Christmas lunch!’ the caption of one of the post reads.
The Kapoor family gathers annually for their Christmas lunch, and this year was particularly noteworthy as Ranbir and Alia Bhatt introduced their daughter, Raha Kapoor, to the public on this occasion. They arrived at Sashi Kapoor's home for lunch and later presented Raha to the paparazzi. The first images of the one-year-old quickly spread across the internet.
The Christmas lunch was also attended by Karisma Kapoor and her kids Samaira and Kiaan, her parents Babita and Randhir Kapoor, Sashi Kapoor's son Kunal Kapoor as well as Ranbir's aunt Reema Jain's family. Armaan Jain and Aadar Jain were accompanied by their respective partners. Agastya Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda were also present.
