Black pepper is a regular kitchen ingredient, extensively used as a whole spice or ground into a powder. It adds a spicy seasoning to a bland soup or escalates the flavour of any curry or gravy. But, did you know that the black pepper in your kitchen could possibly be adulterated? Berries of the whole spice may not be entirely pure and if you want to test its purity, here’s a simple hack shared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Place a small quantity of black pepper on a table. Press the berries with your finger. The pure berries will not break away easily. The adulterated berries, on the other hand, break away easily, showing there are light blackberries mixed in with the normal black pepper.
And there you go! Try this easy hack to figure out if the black pepper in your kitchen is usable or not.
