A Special Investigation Team probing the Lakhimpur Kheri farmers killings has said that the killings was a "planned conspiracy".

Union Minister Ajay Mishra's jailed son Ashish Mishra is the main accused in the case where farmers were mowed down by an SUV belonging to the minister.

Ashish Mishra and others have already been booked under murder and conspiracy charges. The Special Investigation Team wants "attempt to murder" and other charges added.

The development signals trouble for the BJP and union minister Mishra ahead of the UP polls early next year. Mishra has remained in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government despite calls for his sacking.

Eight people died in the October 3 violence incident in Lakhimpur. Besides the journalist, four were farmers who were allegedly knocked down by a vehicle carrying BJP workers. Infuriated farmers then allegedly lynched some people in the vehicles. They included two BJP workers and their driver.
