This year, Buddha Purnima is being celebrated on May 16. This day is considered to be of huge significance as it was on this day when Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment.

It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Baisakh month. Buddhism in India dates many years back. Have a look at 4 iconic Buddhist sites in India that attract visitors from all over the world.

Bodh Gaya, Bihar 

This site is known to be the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. This tree is located in the Mahabodhi Temple. 

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh 

It was this place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. He explained the four noble truths and the teachings associated with them, in his sermon. 

Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh 

This is the site where Lord Buddha is said to have attained Mahaparinirvana at the age of 80.

Kaushambi is said to be the place that Lord Buddha visited several times and where he preached in the sixth and ninth year of his attaining enlightenment.
