Bad news for loofah lovers! According to Dermatologist Nivedita Dadu, loofah sponges are not the best shower accessory.  Their textured surface can trap dead skin cells, soap residue and moisture, creating a cozy environment for bacteria to thrive.

In her video, the expert shares some tips to keep the bathing routine safe and infection-free.

  • Make sure to replace your loofah every three to four weeks
  • After each use, let it air dry in a well-ventilated area
  • Rinse it thoroughly before using it again
  • Can try using washcloths or natural sponges as alternatives to loofahs

Previous studies have also revealed that scrubbers made from a tropical species of cucumber fibre are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The humid, damp, and relatively undisturbed environment of the shower allows the bactria toe multiply before your next rinse.
