If you find yourself desperately reaching for a heavy moisturizer to combat dryness after cleansing, skincare experts warn that it may be a concerning sign.

According to a dermatologist, the sensation of dryness post-face wash often indicates that the cleanser is too harsh, potentially compromising the skin's protective barrier and resulting in moisture loss. This "squeaky clean" feeling may alter the skin's pH balance, potentially causing damage.

A compromised skin barrier can lead to persistent acne, wrinkles, rough patches, dry or flaky skin, as well as sensations of itchiness or tenderness, especially when applying products.

Ideally, after cleansing, your skin should feel soft and adequately hydrated, eliminating the immediate need for moisturizer.

While washing your face in the shower might save time, the dermatologist advises against using overly hot water, which can be drying. The recommendation is to cleanse facial skin post-shower, and applying a moisturizer before rinsing can safeguard the skin barrier from the effects of both hot and hard water during a shower.

In warmer months, opt for a gel- or foam-based cleanser to combat excess heat and dead skin. In colder months, switch to a cream cleanser, and consider adding one with a milk base for additional hydration.

Experts emphasize the importance of using gentle cleansers to effectively remove surface dirt and debris without compromising the skin barrier.

In harsh weather conditions, incorporating hyaluronic or lactic acid into your routine can help maintain a radiant complexion. Additionally, niacinamide is recommended for reducing redness. As temperatures drop, don't forget the essentials: SPF, vitamins, and moisturizers to keep your skin protected and nourished.
